Degustazione PORT ELLEN originali

   Port Ellen 22 Y.O. 1st Release 1979/2001 56,2%     6000 bottles 

COLOR : dark straw
NOSE : Sweet and much rubber right at the start, with some typical notes of  tyres, tar, pepper...
Some fruity notes emerge, like apple, green pear, green plum. Yet, it's finally even austere and satisfying.
It then gets quite vegetal (wet fern, moss) and even a little mineral (wet chalk). A great one.
PALATE : again, it's crispier and fruitier at the same time, but still very austere. More tar, more rubber, and much, much more pepper.
Some sweetness but it comes from the alcohol. It then grows more and more powerful and drier...
What a body! The pepper grows even stronger after a few minutes... And the sweetness vanishes, leaving just a mixture of smoke,
pepper and lemon zest that might displease the lovers of round and smooth whiskies - but not the peat heads, obviously.
FINISH : The finish is very long but again, very austere.

    Port Ellen 24 Y.O. 3rd Release 1979/2003 57,3%   9000 bottles 

COLOR : pale gold
NOSE : vegetal, grassy, lemony and malty, maybe not really violent but it hasn't got the 'polished' side of this year's release.
Big notes of lamp oil, fresh putty, walnut skins and marzipan. Also hints of antiseptic and nail polish.
PALATE : maybe a tad waxier and more almondy and peppery. Also a bit drying - it seems that there's more oak here.
Gets a little too hot, let's see what happens with water (while the nose got even grassier): it's almost plain seawater now! Smoked seawater, amazing
FINISH : long 'of course' but rather rough, salty and grassy

    Port Ellen 30 Y.O. 9th Release 1979/2009 57,7%  5916 bottles 

COLOR : white wine
NOSE : grass, soaked barley, smoked porridge and diesel oil. Also more shoe polish and whiffs of eucalyptus starting to come through (sign of age?) The most straightforward but not the least complex. Big smoke. With water: this one gets rather more maritime with water, more on oysters, sea breeze and all that jazz. Also almonds and a little camphor, not unlike what happens with some of the most legendary of its neighbours when they get very old. Superb, obviously. Just hints of 'clean' manure.
PALATE : austere but elegant. Very dry, grassy and smoky attack, then quite some lemon, manymineral notes 'cool climate style' (to speak like a wino) and many phenolic/resinous notes.Splendid austerity. With water: gets ultra-dry, all on smoke and ashes
FINISH : something that reminds me of the revered Rare Malts (20 and 22yo), minus the brutality. Comments: rather intellectual, just the opposite of these modern easy-sexy drams with no soul (and no cojones).

Port Ellen  Distillery

Port Ellen un nome magico, un malto prezioso e molto, molto raro: a parte gli anni eroici, dalla fondazione agli inizi del '900,
la distillerie è rimasta in produzione solo 16 anni ( dal 1967 al 1983 ). Purtoppo gli alambicchi sono stati rimossi e al momento, non si intravedono possibilità di riapertura. Nel 1973 è stato costruito nell'area adiacente alla distilleria un grande impianto di maltazione che fornisce il malto a tutte le distillerie di Islay. Dopo vari imbottigliamenti privati Diageo ha immesso nel mercato due edizioni Rare Malts del 1978 ( 20 e 22 YO ) e,
a partire dal 2001 viene prodotta una edizione annuale cask strength (siamo alla 9th edition)

chi di voi ha partecipato a questa serata, qualche anno fa, si ricorderà' che, tra le altre bottiglie, abbiamo assaggiato l'edizione originale n°6.
Questa sera invece avremo la possibilità' di degustare: la prima rarissima edizione che ormai ha raggiunto un valore di mercato di oltre 1000 euro,l'edizione n°3 imbottigliata nell'anno 2003, nonché' l'ultima edizione prodotta fino ad ora, di trenta anni di invecchiamento. Tutte sono di qualità' eccezionale. Quest'anno (2010) verrà' messa sul mercato l'edizione n°10 (1980-2010) : ancora un trent'anni ... non lasciamocela sfuggire
