BOWMORE Bourbon 16 Y.O. 1989-2005 51.8%

COLOUR:
pale straw
NOSE: much, much cleaner than the Enigma.
Not very boldly aromatic but extremely fresh, with an interesting mix of
fresh butter, flowers from the fields and tropical fruits.
Quite some pink grapefruit, litchee syrup, pear juice... Quite some
iodine at that, sea air, seaweed... But the peat is surprisingly
subdued. Hints of vanilla, lactones... Very nice,
I didn't have such a "clean" and elegant (rather) young Bowmore OB since
ages.
PALATE: oh, now it's very, very perfumy,
with lots of Turkish delights, rosewater, gewurztraminer, rose jelly,
Cologne water, incense... I'm sorry but I do not like this kind of
profile,
so typical of some fairly recent Bowmores. Don't get me wrong, I'm not
saying it's flawed, just one of these ultra-perfumy Bowmores
FINISH: Long finish, getting a little
bitter and very, very peppery.

NOSE: A
youthful aroma with smoking peat embers.
PALATE: Dazzling, multi-layered peat offers
various layers of intensity and sweetness, from Fisherman's Friend cough
candy to Tyrolean smoked cheese.
FINISH: Long with excellent vanilla
involvement and a dash of buttery kipper.
BALANCE: The nose promises little, but the
complexity and sure-footedness of this malt is truly wonderful.

BOWMORE Port 16 Y.O. 1991-2007 53.1%

COLOUR:
reddish, pink amber
NOSE: a very pretty mix of fresh fruits and
'Bowmore'. Sure the cassis is heavy, and so are the strawberry notes,
but it goes well with the peat and the pepper. Lots of liquorice roots
as well. This one works for me on the nose, and better than the older
version (Bowmore Voyage).
PALATE: yes it works. Port and whisky
create kind of a third dimension here, it's not like if both walked just
side by side like in many Port wood finished whiskies (but this is full
maturing).
FINISH: Ginger, pepper, bubblegum, ginger
tonic. A success but beware, the Port is rather heavy

COLOUR:
Ruby red.
NOSE: Rich stewed fruit berries, sweet
black cherries and hints of bitter, dark chocolate underlined by a
lighter Bowmore smokiness.
PALATE: Warm and rounded, packed full of
fruit flavours' [sic] of brambles and damson jam followed by a subtle
earthy peat smoke.

BOWMORE Sherry 16 Y.O. 1990-2006 53.8 %

COLOUR:
amber
NOSE: not that different at very first
nosing but then the sherry really starts to come through, with superb
notes of 'yellow' (fino type), dead leaves, coffee and smoke. Great
balance. Then we have the peaty, farmy notes (hay), both smoked and
roasted tea (hochicha), with huge and rather unusual notes of smoked
sausages arising. Barbecue? Hints of mustard as well, balsamic vinegar,
salted liquorice, pipe juice, tar... Luxuriant but full of 'uprightness'
at trie same time. I like it a lot.
PALATE: : just as rich but alas, some much
feared notes of 'geranium jelly' shine through.
An odd fruitiness that just doesn't combine well with the peat I think
and that we also had in many older 'pre-Signatory' Edradours.
Luckily, it does improve after a moment, with lots of cocoa, coffee and
roasted raisins but that happens probably too late.
This palate is far from being a catastrophe but it reminds me of some
other Bowmores or heavily sherried Glen Gariochs (1985 anyone?) and
their offbeat perfumy notes
Serge Valentin
NOSE:
Really dark whisky in both colour and nose. Burnt leather, wood smoke,
prunes, heather honey, seaweed.
PALATE: Very intense, both smoke and sherry
very pronounced, coconut in the finish.
OVERALL: Typical Bowmore, just a lot richer.

registrata in Scozia.
all'ambra al bronzo.
